William S. Boyd's 6th Annual Community Law Day: Saturday, August 22, 9:00 am-1:00 pm at William S. Boyd School of Law. 

PILA Luncheon: August 22, 2015, 1:30-2:30 p.m., BSL Room 102

The following people will discuss their careers and their work in the fields of public interest:

  •        Justice of the Peace Bita Khamsi, former Public Defender, Judge Khamsi was appointed to the bench in February 2015. As a PD, Judge Khamsi was charged with creating the North Las Vegas Community Court that was tasked with providing counseling and employment training to young non-violent offenders to help prevent recidivism. In 2014, she received the Pro Bono Project Award of Excellence from Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and the President’s Award from the Nevada Attorneys for Criminal Justice.   •       Attorney Doreen Spears Hartwell just celebrated the one-year anniversary of the founding of her own firm, Hartwell Thalacker. She’s practiced business and commercial litigation since 2000, and in December 2014, she received the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award from the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada. In addition to running a thriving law practice, she is also a member of the Nevada Supreme Court's Access to Justice Commission, and is the supervising attorney for the Clark County Law Foundation's Tiral by Peers Program. Her full bio can be found here:
  •        Attorney Jessica Perlick graduated from Boyd in 2013. She was a Public Interest Fellow, worked with PILA, and the India Human Rights Practicum during her time at Boyd. In 2012, she received the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada Public Interest Law Student of Distinction award and was the 2013 graduating class Barbara Buckley Community Service Award recipient. She is a Graduate Fellow in the Family Justice Clinic supervising student attorneys and helping community members with family law issues. Her full bio can be found here:
