During her time as a law student, Jessica Perlick (JD ’13) was an active and involved member of the student body, so it is no surprise that she has found her way back to Boyd, working as a Graduate Fellow in the Family Justice Clinic (“FJC”). Jessica is an alumna of the FJC and, together with her partner Angela Cook (JD ’13), received the CALI Award for her work in the clinic.
Jessica is a native Texan who received her undergraduate degree from Rice University in 2004. She moved to Reno in 2005, where she worked in a small, family-owned financial planning firm until 2010 when she moved to Las Vegas to attend Boyd. Jessica started her law school career as a part-time student, which enabled her to complete an AmeriCorps term of service during her 1L year. She worked in the Pro Bono Project at Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada as a Volunteer Liaison, recruiting attorneys to donate their time to a variety of Ask-A-Lawyer sessions. In 2011, Jessica was named the Southern Nevada AmeriCorps Member of the Year.
After transitioning from part-time to full-time status, Jessica continued to pursue her passion for service and public interest law through her work with the Public Interest Law Student Association, the India Human Rights Practicum, and as a Public Interest Fellow. She was recognized as the 2012 Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada Public Interest Law Student of Distinction, and the 2013 graduating class Barbara Buckley Community Service Award recipient. Jessica completed a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Abbi Silver before gravitating back to Boyd.
In her graduate fellowship, Jessica acts as a resource for the students and community alike. As a supervising attorney, she reviews students’ work on correspondence, court pleadings, and other case-related documents. She answers inquiries from community members seeking assistance on family law issues. Jessica also participates in multi-disciplinary projects with outside partners, and provides client coverage while the clinic is not in session. The fellowship has provided Jessica the perfect opportunity to expand her skills while realizing her passion of providing legal assistance to those in need.
