In 2018, Immigrants Facing Deportation in Las Vegas are Less Likely to Have a Lawyer
Many people saw yesterday's critique of American Immigration Courts on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Here is current data about representation rates in the Las Vegas Immigration Court, which has jurisdiction over the entire State of Nevada:
Facts about the Las Vegas Immigration Court in FY2017
New deportation cases filed: 2,648
Percent w/o attorneys: 44% (increased to 62% in FY2018)
Percent of DETAINED respondents w/ attorney: 22%
Percent Ordered Removed WITH ATTORNEYS: 35%
Percent Ordered Removed WITHOUT ATTORNEY: 83%
The headline from this data may be that immigrants seem to be having a harder time finding lawyers this year than last, with 62 percent unrepresented in FY2018 (up from 44 percent).
This data is gleaned from the Transactional Records Access Clearing House (TRAC) at Syracuse University.
