Three broad principles underlie the Fellows Program: Community, Development, and Reflection.
Community: The Public Interest Fellowship Program offers its Fellows the opportunity to become part of a community of students, faculty, and advocates. The Program will bring this community together through seminars, reading groups, informal meetings and gatherings, conversation with public leaders in Nevada, activities in the Public Interest Law Association and similar organizations, and opportunities for the Fellows to present to faculty and other students.
Development: The law school will create opportunities and structures to support the Fellows throughout law school and to further develop their interests and leadership potential.
Reflection: Fellows will be expected to work at least one summer during law school for an organization that promotes the mission of public interest work. Fellows may select from a wide variety of opportunities, including state and federal legislatures, and offices of government and non-profit legal agencies.
Prospective students must apply by March 15. Fellows are awarded:
- A generous one-time grant applied toward tuition. The one-time grant will be stated in the student’s offer to join the PIF program, and will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters.
- Students who start at Boyd Law in fall 2023 and later must apply for the fellowship each year to be considered. Students may re-apply for the PIF grant for their second and third years, and fourth year for part-time students.
- Up to two $5,000 stipends in the summer after their first, second, or third (for part-time students) years to support the Fellow in summer public interest employment. Stipends are in addition to any salary received from a public interest employer.
- Reasonable expenses, up to $1,700, to attend one public interest conference in the contiguous U.S. while the Fellow is a J.D. candidate.

Current students must apply by April 15. Applicants are notified if they are selected after spring final examinations.
Fellows are awarded:
- Applicants are admitted into the fellows program the fall semester after they apply to the program.
- If the Fellow is not already receiving a scholarship or is receiving less than a half-tuition scholarship, the Fellow will receive a total of a one-half resident tuition scholarship for his or her remaining years as a Public Interest Fellow. Fellows who are already receiving a one-half resident tuition scholarship or greater will not receive additional scholarship money.
- One $5,000 stipend for full-time students for public interest employment the summer between the student’s second and third years. Part-time students may receive up to two $5,000 stipends for public interest employment the summers between second and third years and third and fourth years. Stipends are in addition to any salary received from a public interest employer.
- Reasonable expenses, up to $1,700, to attend one public interest conference in the contiguous U.S. while the Fellow is a J.D. candidate.
