Stonewall Debate: Same-Sex Marriage
The debate over Same-Sex Marriage has become one of the most contentious social issues of the past decade. To date only 5 states have legalized Same-Sex Marriage with more than 30 banning it outright. In response to these developments advocates for same-sex marriage have taken their cause to the courts, resulting in both victories and defeats. One of the most recent victories has been a California District court striking down Proposition 8, an initiative passed by the people of California banning same-sex marriage. The issue now sits on the desk of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and many expect the issue to make its way up to the Supreme Court in the next few years. With these developments in mind, The Stonewall Society, in conjunction with the American Constitut ional Society and the Federalist Society, present a debate on the legal merits of banning or legalizing same-sex marriage.
