Program Description
Generations of lawyers are familiar with bar exams, the defining ritual of our cautious profession. But change is afoot. In her new book, Shaping the Bar: The Future of Attorney Licensing (Stanford University Press 2023), Professor Joan Howarth describes the shifting landscape of attorney licensing. In this session Professor Howarth will discuss how a laser focus on public protection is changing attorney licensing, enabling the legal profession to become more inclusive, equitable, and client-focused. Special guests Justice Michael Douglas and Board of Bar Examiners Vice-Chair Lynn Fulstone will offer commentary.
Signed books will be available for purchase after the talk. Berkeley Dean Erwin Chemerinsky calls Shaping the Bar “tremendously impressive, thorough, and excellent in every respect.” Former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary McCormack calls it “critical reading” for “all who care about building an ethical, competent, diverse legal profession that can meet the growing access to justice crisis in the United States.”
