Indian Self-Determination Act
In 1975, the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, which allowed for Indian tribes to have greater autonomy and responsibility for programs and services administered to them on behalf of the Secretary of the Interior, was enacted. The Act gave Indian tribes key involvement in the direction of services provided by the federal government in order to better assist the needs and desires of the local communities.
