David Orentlicher - Making Aid in Dying Legal
Dr. David Orentlicher served on the planning committee for a workshop on physician aid in dying that was sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He also discussed his scholarship on why we’re seeing a trend toward legalization of aid in dying in the United States.
Dr. Orentlicher also inaugurated his health law legislation course this year, and students worked on two legislative proposals. One group worked with State Senator Pat Spearman on a proposal to achieve universal access to health care in Nevada. A second group worked with State Senator David Parks on a reintroduction of his Death with Dignity bill, which passed the Nevada Senate but stalled in the Nevada House last year.
Dr. Orentlicher also continued his work on the connection between economic inequality and health and economic inequality and college admissions policies. He discussed “Healthcare, Health, and Income,” at the Medicalization of Poverty symposium, University of Illinois College of Law, and “Economic Inequality and College Admissions Policies,” at the Poverty States: Federalism, Rights, and State Anti-Poverty Efforts conference, American University Washington College of Law.
