UNLV Boyd School of Law and Lori Kalani Name Scholarship for Freddie Glusman

12/18/2017

LAS VEGAS – The UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV Boyd Law alumna Lori Kalani, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, the Glusman family, and their friends came together at Piero’s Italian Cuisine on Friday, December 15, 2017 to celebrate the “Freddie Glusman Scholarship.” Founded in 2016 and named by Kalani for her former employer and mentor, Piero’s owner Freddie Glusman, the scholarship provides tuition support for selected Boyd Law students.

Lori Kalani, co-chair of the country’s largest State Attorneys General Practice at 700-attorney law firm Cozen O’Connor, overcame significant obstacles to earn her B.A. and MBA at UNLV. Then, with support from Freddie Glusman, she was able to enroll in the 1999 part-time J.D. program at Boyd, Nevada’s only law school.  With Kalani’s establishment of the Freddie Glusman scholarship, Kalani said she can now “pay it forward” to Boyd Law students facing similar challenges, especially with additional contributions from colleagues, friends, and family of Kalani and Glusman.

“We take great pride in the wide-ranging backgrounds of the student body at the law school, making it one of the most diverse in the nation,” said Daniel W. Hamilton, dean of the UNLV Boyd School of Law. “Lori is a shining example of someone who overcame hardships in part because of her support system. We are honored and grateful for her leadership and generosity on behalf of our students.”

“I grew up in Las Vegas, came from a broken family, and overcame a lot of adversity,” said Kalani. “I know from my own experiences that one of the tough things for me was first and foremost overcoming personal challenges and then finding the money to go to school. I’ve worked hard and now I have the means to provide help to somebody who has overcome similar challenges.”
