The Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution provides a forum for the advanced study of the nature of conflict and how to resolve it. Through our scholarly research, coursework, lectures, conferences, and workshops, we explore a wide array of disputes—public and private as well as regional, national, and international.

Mission

The vision of the Saltman Center mirrors the tripartite mission of the School of Law: research, teaching, and public service.

In keeping with that mission, we aspire to:

  • stimulate scholarly research and exchanges on the nature of conflict and the methods for avoiding and resolving disputes;
  • provide law students and others with instruction in dispute resolution theory, methodologies, and high level professional skills; and
  • facilitate the resolution of public and private sector conflicts both directly through our clinic and also indirectly through our teaching and public events.

To fulfill our mission, we focus on:

Coursework

The Saltman Center curriculum provides a wide variety of classes focusing on topics such as negotiation, mediation, arbitration and client counseling. Our Mediation Clinic gives law students instruction in mediation theory and technique and enables them to mediate a range of disputes referred by local courts, agencies, and organizations. Each summer, our Saltman Summer Institute brings accomplished scholars and teachers from around the country, and the world, to offer short, intensive courses on conflict resolution skills and cutting-edge topics in the field of dispute resolution.

Informative Discourse

The Saltman Center hosts lectures, conferences and symposia featuring distinguished dispute resolution scholars as well as prominent practitioners. Many of these events, including our Peace in the Desert Lecture Series, are open to the public.

In collaboration with the Nevada Law Journal, the Boyd School of Law’s academic journal, the Saltman Center publishes a variety of articles arising from these activities.

Research Collections

In conjunction with the Wiener-Rogers Law Library at the Boyd School of Law, the Saltman Center is developing one of the premier collections of library materials devoted to conflict resolution. This diverse array of research materials is available for use by students, academics, legal practitioners, and the public.

Community Outreach

The Center pursues opportunities to sponsor or co-sponsor continuing education programs and public fora on topics in conflict resolution that are of interest to the legal community and the larger community, including conflicts that arise in both the public and private sectors. These outreach programs include Continuing Legal Education programs that satisfy the requirements of the State Bar of Nevada and the bars of other states as well.
