When immigrants interact with the criminal justice system, the federal immigration consequences are often disproportionate to the state criminal consequences. This discussion will provide an overview of the intersection of immigration and criminal law and examine the repercussions of the definition of a conviction for immigration purposes, crimes involving moral turpitude and aggravated felonies, and sentencing considerations. Panelists also will explore practice challenges and strategies.
