Program Description
A panel discussion on the rule of law, executive power, and the lasting legacy of Korematsu. Attorneys who served as part of the pro bono team that reopened Fred T. Korematsu’s case to overturn his conviction, and members of the “Stop Repeating History” team will offer insight on the historical development of this area of law, and its evolution to today’s doctrine.
Following the panel discussion, there will be a screening of ABA 2018 Silver Gavel Award winning documentary, “And Then They Came For Us.” This film details the history of Japanese American internment during World War II and discusses its role in the modern times in the context of the travel bans.
Presenters
Don Tamaki has specialized in providing value-driven legal counsel to entrepreneurs, privately-held companies, and nonprofit corporations. Mr. Tamaki served on the pro bono team that reopened the landmark Supreme Court case of Korematsu v. the United States. Mr. Tamaki is President of the board of director of the San Francisco Japantown.
Hoyt Zia - recently retired as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Hawaiian Airlines, Inc. He practiced as an attorney in San Francisco and in Honolulu, in law firms and in-house with Hawaiian, Motorola, Inc. and Amfac/JMB Hawaii, Inc. He served in the Clinton Administration as Chief Counsel for Export Administration, Department of Commerce.Mr. Zia is an original founding member of NAPABA, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and served as its first president. Mr. Zia is also a member of the Stop Repeating History campaign.
