Senator Torricelli was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1951. He graduated from the Storm King School at Cornwall on the Hudson, New York in 1970. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers College in 1974, a law degree from Rutgers University School of Law in 1977, and a Master’s degree from Harvard University in 1980.
He served as Deputy Legislative Counsel to Governor Brendan T. Byrne from 1975 to 1977, and as Deputy Counsel to Vice President Walter F. Mondale from 1978 to 1981. He was a member of the Rutgers University Board of Governors from 1977 to 1982.
Senator Torricelli was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Ninth District of New Jersey in 1982 and was re-elected six times prior to his election to the U.S. Senate in 1996. During his tenure in the Senate, he was a member of the Senate Finance, Governmental Affairs, Foreign Relations, Judiciary, and Rules committees. As Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, he was the first Senator ever elected to the Senate Leadership in his first term. During his service on the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Torricelli played a central role in rewriting federal bankruptcy rules, assuring federal financing for healthcare institutions, and was a leading voice for tax reduction. He was the author of the provisions making college tuition tax deductible.
As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Torricelli was a leading expert on Middle East and Latin American policy issues.
Upon retiring from the Senate, Senator Torricelli established a national and international business strategy firm, Rosemont Associates, and created a real estate development business. Woodrose Properties has built, renovated or invested in approximately fifty projects.
Senator Torricelli was appointed in 2003 by the Federal Courts to oversee among the largest environmental projects in the nation, a billion-dollar chromium contamination remediation project that will enable redevelopment of the 100 acre parcel in Jersey City, N.J.
