PETER D. HART
Leading Pollster and Public Policy Expert
Peter D. Hart doesn't build computers, create soft drink flavors, design jewelry, or run for office. But his work has been key in determining the future for some of the most influential corporations and politicians in the country. The organization, Peter D. Hart Research Associates, has conducted strategy planning projects for clients such as Coca-Cola, AT&T, and Tiffany & Co. Political clientele have included leaders that have been in the forefront of American politics over the last half century from Hubert Humphrey, Jay Rockefeller, and Edward Kennedy to Bill Clinton.
Trend tester. Hart is regarded as one of the top analysts of public opinion in the United States. He is also a leading shaper of national trends and political messages. He founded Hart Research in 1971 and since 1989 he has been a pollster for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal. In the political realm, Hart has represented more than 55 United States Senators and 40 governors. No other polling firm has represented more United States Senators and Governors than Hart Research. Additional focuses on public policy and cultural issues have included work for such clients as the Smithsonian Institution, Habitat for Humanity, UNICEF, and the Gates Foundation. In the international realm, Hart Research has conducted studies in South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

He has been called the dean of this generation of pollsters. In 2002, Hart was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Campaign Consulting by American University Campaign Management Institute.

In association with Dan McGinn, the pair has worked closely with major companies like 3M, and Citi Group to guide corporations about changing attitudes and expectations.
Mr. Hart has been acknowledged by the leaders in the field as one of the most astute observers of public attitudes in politics and consumer attitudes. David Brooks of the New York Times called him the “uber pollster” and Albert Hunt of Bloomberg refers to the NBC /Wall Street Journal Survey as the “Gold Standard” of public poll.
Hart has appeared on Meet the Press, The Today Show, and Rock Center with Brian Williams. For the past 30 years, he has been a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow.
