UNLV Thomas & Mack Legal Clinic
A Laboratory For Justice

Our Mission

Our mission is to serve the community, educate students, and improve the law. By design, the Clinic functions as a laboratory for justice. Through training, advocacy, scholarship, and community partnerships, we strive to improve the law and law practice.

The Clinic offers seven clinics in regular rotation and is also home to Kids' Court School, a nationally recognized, research-based program that educates child-witnesses about the judicial process, and has served over 1,000 students since 2002.

Our Impact

  • justice AmeriCorps: UNLV is the only law school in the nation to win this grant to represent unaccompanied children in immigration court.
  • Appellate: In a case that was student-briefed and argued, the Clinic won a published Ninth Circuit decision securing discovery rights in immigration court.
  • Education Advocacy: Students facilitated the placement of a five-year-old girl with developmental disabilities in a general education classroom.
  • Family Justice: Students secured for a grandmother guardianship over her two young grandchildren whose parents are incarcerated.
  • Immigration: Students won protection for a mentally incompetent client from Iran who was at risk of torture due to his religious conversion.
  • Juvenile Justice: Students led a successful campaign to end routine shackling of children in court and are working to protect sexually exploited children.
  • Mediation: In the fall, students mediated over 60 cases involving child custody, property distribution in divorce, breach of contract, and landlord tenant.
  • Small Business & Non-Profit: Students helped gain 501(c)(3) status for a museum at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1876) in Virginia City, Nevada.

Our Goals

  • Funding a clinic fellow allows us to serve more clients and more students.
  • Funding justice AmeriCorps enables us to serve more unaccompanied children.
  • Funding client services, including experts, interpreters, and extended hours, enables us to provide (and train students to provide) full-service representation.
