Intersections of psychology & law take center-stage! Forensic psychiatrist, Acting Dean of the UNR Medical School, and Co-author of the National Judicial College's 'bench book' chapter on handling developmental disabilities in capital cases (Presiding in Capital Cases 2020), Dr. Melissa Piasecki, (Death Row Inmates and Mental Health (jaapl.org)) discusses Atkins v. Virginia, its progeny, and how intellectual disabilities impact death penalty eligibility determinations. Time permitting, we'll also consider the psychological impact of facing an imminent end as a punishment.
