Latisha Nixon-Jones
Latisha Nixon-Jones is a rising scholar in the field of Disaster Law, with a focus on disaster preparedness, long-term recovery, and community resilience. She served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Southern University Law Center, where she taught courses in torts, disaster law, and legal research and writing. Her practical experience includes creating and leading a disaster law clinic through an Equal Justice Works Fellowship to support recovery efforts following the 2016 South Louisiana floods—an initiative that helped over 200 residents. Prior to entering academia, she worked in the insurance industry and later in public service, helping draft administrative laws as an executive management officer with the Louisiana Workforce Commission.
Professor Nixon-Jones' research explores the intersection of disaster, insurance, and administrative law, with an emphasis on equitable access to legal and recovery systems. Her work earned her the 2020 COVID-19 Research Innovation Award from the University of Oregon. A dedicated advocate for expanding access to justice and empowering women—especially mothers—through entrepreneurship and education, she also serves on the Legal Writing Institute’s Diversity Board. Professor Nixon-Jones is passionate about using the law to create resilient communities and hopes to one day teach entrepreneurial law abroad to low-income women.
