Boyd Students Partner with Local Nonprofit Groups to Give Free Legal Information Classes
The intricacies of bankruptcy law, the steps necessary in foreclosure mediation and the family court process are just some of the topics addressed in a series of free legal education classes offered to the community through the UNLV Boyd School of Law.
The UNLV Boyd School of Law, in partnership with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and Nevada Legal Services, has sponsored legal information classes the last 12 years and has helped more than 30,000 people in the community.
The classes are designed to cover specific areas of law that will help individuals understand court procedures, documentation requirements and changes to laws. Individuals who attend the classes may apply for pro bono assistance.
Several of these classes are being offered at Community Law Day, an event co-sponsored by the UNLV Boyd School of Law, the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, Nevada Legal Services, and the Rotary Club of Pahrump Valley. This inaugural event is free and open to the public. It will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Pahrump Valley High School, 501 E. Calvada Blvd in Pahrump.
“Community service is an extremely important part of training great lawyers," said John Valery White, dean of the law school. "Attorneys are public servants whose obligations to the public are underscored by these events. We are delighted to bring our students together with alumni, and attorneys with our community partners—Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and Nevada Legal Services—to provide legal information to those in need. We are particularly happy to do so in Pahrump which, like other communities in Nevada, has suffered in the economic downturn.”
The event will offer the following classes:
- Bankruptcy
- Family Law – Divorce
- Family Law – Spanish
- Foreclosure Mediation
- Paternity/Custody
- Small Claims
- Social Security Disability Benefits
- Tenant’s Rights
