Gaming Law Students Help Sign Bill into Law

Jaime Serrano, Jr., class of 2012, is one of many impressive William S. Boyd School of Law students who helped sign a Nevada gaming bill into law.

On May 30, 2011, Gov. Brian Sandoval signed A.B. 213, making it effective on Oct. 1, 2011.

The bill, written under the supervision of renowned gaming attorney and Boyd Adjunct Professor Bob Faiss, makes various changes related to gaming including allowing the Gaming Commission to issue a “preliminary finding of suitability” in Nevada under all circumstances.

This project was part of Faiss’ spring course on gaming policy. Boyd offers the most extensive gaming law course offerings in the world, and there is talk of establishing the world’s first law school program that awards a certificate in Gaming Law.

For Serrano, this would be a dream come true. Hoping to break into the world of gaming law after graduation, Serrano worked on this bill directly from Carson City while working as a legislative extern.

“That’s the exceptional thing about Boyd: If we attended another school out of state we would not have this kind of access to gaming control, the legislative process, nor benefited from so many alumni in key positions in the legislature,” he said.

Not only are the alumni in key positions, but the entire gaming law faculty is adjunct. Having professors like Faiss, Greg Gemignani and Brin Gibson that work as gaming attorneys every day makes for more interesting courses and grants students unbelievable exposure to key gaming industry decision makers.

“Professor Faiss is awesome,” said Serrano, “he’s the godfather of gaming law.”

The students who contributed to this legislative project are Rick Benito, Chelsey Bosworth, William Campbell, Courtney Devine, Chandeni Gill, David Goodheart, Andrew Hall, Kirk Homeyer, Michael Lafia, Alicia Monroe, Shaun Muaina, Chelsea Nelson, Anthony Sassi, Jaime Serrano, Jr., Heather Trujillo and Vincent Vitatoe.

Other recent legislative externs are Debra Amens, Miles Dickson, Max Fetaz, Whitney Richburg, Sean McDonald, Karl Shelton and Jeremy Thompson.
