Law Student Timothy Koval Receives Carl W. Tobias Excellence in Writing Award
Second-year law student Timothy Koval is this year’s recipient of the Carl W. Tobias Excellence in Writing Award for best student note, which will be published in volume 10 of the Nevada Law Journal.
In his note, Reduced Discretion in Corporate Governance as Applied to the Pharmaceutical Industry in Nevada, Koval discusses the implications of legislation that circumscribes the marketing activities of pharmaceutical companies in Nevada. Specifically, he argues that the current law is over-restrictive on pharmaceutical companies, and that the state could meet its aims with a focus on physician education.

“I have enjoyed my experience on law review,” said Koval, who served as a Nevada Law Journal staff member this past year. “I have learned how to utilize library resources more effectively, and have improved my legal citation skills. In addition, I have been able to complete my scholarly writing requirement through the Journal.”
Koval is expected to graduate from the law school in the spring of 2010. This summer, he will be working as a clerk for Hutchinson & Steffen, a full-service law firm with offices located in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.
The Excellence in Writing Award is named for Carl W. Tobias, a founding faculty member of the William S. Boyd School of Law. He was a faculty member from 1998 to 2004 and was the Beckley Singleton Professor of Law from 2003 to 2004. He is currently the Williams Professor of Law at the University of Richmond School of Law.
