Who in your life has been instrumental to your success?
A lot of people, but particularly my parents, professors, and the judges I had the opportunity to clerk for. One of the great things about Boyd compared to other law schools is the opportunity you have to really get to know and form connections with the faculty. They’re a great source for advice and recommendations, and they really care about their students. Similarly, I was really lucky to have the opportunity to clerk for Judge Hicks and Judge Kleinfeld. I learned a lot about legal writing, the law, and being a successful attorney from them.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done in your career?
Moving to Alaska to clerk for the Ninth Circuit. I grew up in Las Vegas, so it was my first real experience with cold weather and wilderness, and what an introduction it was. That year, I survived a real Alaska winter, complete with -50°F weather and a near complete lack of daylight. I also went dog sledding, had a moose living in my backyard, and skied to work. I learned what ice fog and ulus were. I ate yak. And on top of all that, the experience made me a much better attorney and opened a lot of doors for me professionally.
Any advice you would give to someone in law school?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to people. Get to know your professors, go to events, and talk to attorneys practicing in areas you’re interested in. The legal field is generally very welcoming, and most people love to be asked their opinion. Plus, connections are important in the legal field, and there’s a lot of good information out there.
