Who in your life has been instrumental to your success?
My parents. They instilled the importance of obtaining a good education, because that is something that no one can ever take from you. They taught me the importance of hard work, being true to your word, to be kind to and considerate of others. I try to pass these traits onto my children.
How has the digital age affected the gaming industry?
With regard to sports betting and wagering, Nevada is home to the largest sports books. Our mobile sports wagering activity has increased from approximately $780 million in 2013 to $2.4 billion in 2018, which is an increase of $1.6 billion or 206.5%. Nevada sports books recorded 9 consecutive years of growth, and that growth is good for our state.
The evolution of payments in gaming is of interest to me. Over the last few years, the Commission passed regulations allowing the expansion and integration of wagering accounts maintained by casino patrons. A unified wallet could create efficiencies for customers and the operators and is something that may appeal to the younger demographic. The intersection of cloud computing and gaming and the use of biometrics for patron gaming experience purposes is something the Board will likely have to address in the near future.
What is your favorite thing about living in Nevada?
Nevada is such a unique state with so much to offer, so it’s hard to pick only one thing. The beautiful, natural outdoor experience in northern Nevada is breathtaking. The Las Vegas experience is one of a kind with visitors from all over the world coming here for an overall gaming, hospitality, entertainment and dining experience that has been growing and evolving for years. I love that southern Nevada has always embraced growth and change and constantly redefines itself.
Any advice you would give to someone just starting in the profession?
Self-doubt can be your own worst enemy. Have faith in yourself and your talents, surround yourself with positive, supportive people, and don’t be afraid to try something new.
