From Dean Dan - November 9, 2017
One of the core missions of the UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law is to serve as a legal resource and partner for our local community. We could not fulfill this purpose without the support of individuals and organizations throughout the community who have worked with us for nearly 20 years.
Next week, I am delighted to honor and thank two of our biggest supporters: Ed and Claudia Bernstein. On Nov. 16 at 4 p.m., we will formally launch the Edward M. Bernstein and Associates Children’s Rights Program, part of the UNLV Immigration Clinic at the Thomas & Mack Legal Clinic.
Three years ago, the UNLV Immigration Clinic was one of only seven organizations – and the only law school – to receive an AmeriCorps grant to provide legal defense to children fleeing violence in Central America who arrived alone in the United States. A transformational financial gift from Edward M. Bernstein and Associates will ensure that this Program continues its important work.
The launch of the Children’s Rights Program and recognition ceremony will include a keynote address by Tyler Moran, managing director of the D.C. Immigration Hub, former senior policy advisor for Sen. Harry Reid, and former Immigration Deputy Policy Director for the White House Domestic Policy Council under President Obama.
Additional speakers include:
- Barbara Buckley – Executive Director, Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada
- Yvanna D. Cancela – Nevada State Senate
- Jason Frierson – Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly
- Michael Kagan – Professor of Law and Director of the UNLV Immigration Clinic
- Sam Lieberman – Nevada Board of Regents
- Tom Thomas – Thomas & Mack Company
The UNLV Immigration Clinic works closely with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada to represent unaccompanied children in both family court and immigration cases. The Children’s Rights Program is an important part of this effort and depends on community support to continue.
If you would like to join us for what will be a memorable afternoon, please register here.
