Students Awarded Best Respondent Brief in Frederick Douglass Moot Court Regionals

Third-year law students Koren Boyd and Kimberly Loges earned the Best
Respondent Brief Regional Award at the Frederick Douglass Moot Court and Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Western Regional Competitions held Jan. 20 through 22 at the William S. Boyd School of Law. Participating team members were allowed to write a brief on either side. Judges graded the briefs based on appearance, argument and legal authority. The Best Respondent Brief was awarded to the team with the highest score.

Six other Black Law Students Association (BLSA) members also competed in the event. Brittnie Watkins and Tina Mims participated in moot court, and Randy Westbrook, Kathleen Wilde, Danny Ryan and Zarinah Muhammad competed in the mock trial. The competition pitted Boyd School of Law students against teams from other schools, including Stanford, UCLA and UC Berkley. The teams have been preparing since the fall 2010 semester.

The annual Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition seeks to provide members of the National Black Law Student Association with an opportunity to enhance their brief writing and advocacy skills and is designed to give minority law students a chance to hone their legal skills.
