Time for Citizenship: Boyd Students Volunteer at Naturalization Workshop
On Saturday, July 16, several Boyd School of Law students helped Caesars Entertainment Corporation, the Human Rights Campaign and Mi Familia Vota put on the second 2011 Ya Es Hora ¡Ciudadanía! (It’s time, Citizenship!) naturalization workshop.
This event helps eligible applicants receive free assistance while completing the N-400 citizenship application. The organization has helped more than 1.4 million immigrants to date, and more than 400 people came out to the first Las Vegas workshop in April 2011.
The workshop is staffed with volunteers who make sure each applicant has all requisite documents before helping each individual through the arduous application process. A one-hour training session is all it takes for people like third-year Boyd law student Hillary Walsh to make a difference.
“This positively affects Boyd because it provides a community service opportunity – a core principle the law school was founded upon – and allows students to engage in a process they have likely never even considered as United States citizens,” said Walsh.
Not only does this benefit the hundreds of people who are applying for citizenship, but it helps Boyd students practice in areas like immigration law with some hands-on experience.
