The UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law offers law students currently enrolled at the Law School the opportunity to concentrate their elective studies in intellectual property law. Students who wish to receive formal recognition of the concentration in intellectual property law shall meet the following requirements:
 
 
1. Intellectual Property Law Faculty Supervisor: Select a Faculty Supervisor (Supervisor); either Professor Mary LaFrance or Professor Marketa Trimble may serve as your Supervisor. Meet with your Supervisor and, together with your Supervisor, select classes that will help prepare you for your desired career in intellectual property law.
 
2.  List A Courses. Take both of the following courses (six credits) and earn a minimum grade of B- in each course:*
 
  • Copyright
  • Patents, Trademarks, and Trade Secrets
 
3.  List B Courses. Take six or more credits of some of the following courses:*: 
 
  • Entertainment Law
  • International Intellectual Property
  • Advanced IP Seminar
  • IP Licensing
  • Patent Drafting
  • Law and Business of the Music Industry
  • Privacy, Publicity & Defamation
  • Cyberlaw
  • Advanced Legal Research (Intellectual Property)
  • Legal Drafting: Trademark Practicum
  • Sports Law
 
4.  List C Courses and Other Options. If your List A and List B courses do not add up to 15 credits, you may complete additional credits to meet the required 15-credit minimum by either taking one or more of the following List C Courses, or by utilizing one or more of the other options listed below. 
 
  • List C Courses:
    • Administrative Law
    • Antitrust
    • Federal Courts
    • International Business Transactions
    • International Commercial Arbitration
    • Legislation and Statutory Interpretation
    • Negotiation
  • Other Options with Prior Approval by Your Faculty Advisor:
    • An IP law-related paper (a Seminar Paper or Capstone Paper for a course other than a List B Course; Directed Research Paper or Journal Note)
    • An IP law-related externship
    • An IP law-related moot court competition, LawMeet, and similar IP law-related competitions
    • An elective course not included in lists A, B, and C
 
5. Certification of Completion of the Intellectual Property Law Concentration Requirements. In your final semester of law school, complete the Intellectual Property Law Concentration application in My BoydLaw (login required).  Your Faculty Advisor will review your application, confirm your completion of the Concentration requirements, and notify the law school administration that you shall be awarded the Intellectual Property Law Concentration. A letter will certify your completion of the Concentration requirements.
 

* Minimum Required Average GPA in all List A and List B Courses: 3.0; Minimum Required Grade in Each List A Course: B-
