Business and Commercial Law Concentration

 
The UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law offers law students currently enrolled at the Law School the opportunity to concentrate their elective studies in business and commercial law. Students who wish to receive formal recognition of the concentration in business and commercial law shall meet the following requirements:
 

Concentration Requirements

1. Business and Commercial Law Faculty Supervisors: Select a Faculty Supervisor (Supervisor) from the following list of faculty: Professor Rachel Anderson, Professor Benjamin Edwards, Professor Lori Johnson, Professor Jeanne Price, Professor Nancy Rapoport, Professor Keith Rowley. Meet with your supervisor and, together with your supervisor, select classes that will help prepare you for your desired career in business and commercial law.
 
2. Minimum number of designated course credits: 15
 
3. Minimum average GPA in concentration courses: 3.0
 
4. Minimum grade in designated courses: 2.7
 

List of Courses

 
1.  List A Courses. Take both of the following courses (six credits) and earn a minimum grade of B- in each course:*
  • Business Organization
  • Either Sales and Leases or Secured Transactions
 
2.  List B Courses. Take six or more credits of some of the following courses:
  • Basic Bankruptcy
  • Consumer Law
  • Federal Income Tax
  • International Business Transactions
  • Investor Protection Clinic
  • Labor Law
  • LP3 Transactional Drafting Courses
  • Negotiation
  • Payment Systems
  • Sales and Leases
  • Secured Transactions
  • Taxation of Business Entities
 
3.  List C Courses and Other Options. If your List A and List B courses do not add up to 15 credits, you may complete additional credits to meet the required 15-credit minimum by either taking one or more of the following List C Courses, or by utilizing one or more of the other options listed below. 
  • List C Courses:
    • Administrative Law
    • Antitrust
    • Arbitration
    • Economics and the Law
    • Entertainment Law
    • Gaming Law
    • Health Care Liability and Quality Regulation
    • Health Care Organization and Finance
    • Insurance Law
    • International Commercial Arbitration
    • Law and Business of the Music Industry
    • Patents, Trademarks and Trade Secrets
    • Real Estate Finance
    • Resort and Casino Law
    • Securities Law
  • With prior approval by a faculty advisor:
    1. A Business or Commercial law-related paper (a Seminar Paper or Capstone Paper for a course other than a List B Course; Directed Research Paper or Journal Note)
    2. A Business or Commercial law-related externship
    3. A Business or Commercial law-related moot court competition, LawMeet, and similar business or commercial law-related competitions
    4. An elective course not included in lists A, B, and C
 
4. Certification of Completion of the Business and Commercial Law Concentration Requirements. In your final semester of law school, complete the Business and Commercial Law Concentration application in My BoydLaw (login required).  Your Faculty Advisor will review your application, confirm your completion of the concentration requirements, and notify the law school administration that you shall be awarded the Business and Commercial Law Concentration. A letter will certify your completion of the Concentration requirements.
 

* Minimum Required Average GPA in all List A and List B Courses: 3.0; Minimum Required Grade in Each List A Course: B-
