A Message from Nakia Jackson-Hale, Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events

Boyd Nation,

I hope this edition finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy.

It has been over a year since we have been able to convene with you in person. I wanted to touch base to let you know that the Alumni Board is working hard to bring back the golf tournament in the fall. Additionally, we are working on a Reunion Dinner in the fall that will celebrate the 05’, 10’ and 15’ class years as well as the 06’, 11’ and 16’ class years. We hope to see a fall that looks closer to “normal” that brings back in person events and gatherings!

Because we haven’t been able to catch up, we want

What have you been up to since taking the Bar?

After sitting for both Nevada and California's Bar Exam, I took some time to relax and catch up on my favorite shows. I also began a Judicial Clerkship for the Honorable Timothy C. Williams in August 2020. Judge Williams has both a civil and business docket, so my clerkship has allowed me to learn from some of Nevada's brightest civil and business litigation attorneys. Judge Williams is also an excellent mentor as he has coached me in successful courtroom strategy, persuasive legal argument, and concise legal writing.

Who in your life has been instrumental to your success?

My family and the mentors throughout my life have been instrumental to my success. Without my father pushing me to never give up in no matter what I set my mind to I wouldn’t be where I am today. Also, my mentors throughout my life, at law school, and at Howard & Howard have helped shape my career and continue to push me into becoming a better attorney.

Tell me about your decision to attend Boyd School of Law.

My legal career started off on the beaches of California but I knew I wanted to attend Boyd from day one. No matter where life

What advice would you give to a new colleague?

Do not give up. Whether you want that job in big law, or want that clerkship with a federal judge, or want to go in house. Do not give up because you were not able to get your dream job out of law school. There are many ways to get to where you want to go. Sometimes you just need to go through some challenges to get there. It is often said our first jobs don’t define us. And it is very true. This is probably true with the job market during the COVID times as well. So, if you are not happy where you are or had a dream of where you wanted to be

What have you been up to after taking the Bar?

After getting some much-needed rest and relaxation, I started working at Holley Driggs in Las Vegas in September as a transactional associate. I work primarily on real estate contracts, entity formation, secured transactions, and some corporate law. It has been an incredibly challenging and rewarding experience, and I am grateful to be surrounded by such a talented and supportive group of colleagues.

What do you enjoy in your off hours?

I enjoy spending time outdoors with my wife Felicia and our poodle Zai Zai. During the summer, we go hiking
