Thanks to Professor Becky Harris, who last semester taught a course on Gaming Law Policy. Becky is a former state senator, an LL.M. in Gaming Law from Boyd, and past chair of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Her students drafted proposed legislation for consideration by the Board. One such proposal was recently considered by the Board and was passed unanimously and effective immediately. We thank Professor Harris for providing law students with such a unique opportunity and congratulations to her class for having a real-world impact on the gaming industry.

Dear Boyd Nation,

Normally, we would be in Ham Hall at UNLV gathered together to celebrate our newest alums. Families and friends would scream and shout, air horns would sound, and Frank would keep everything moving like clockwork. Even though we are at home, we want to celebrate the Class of 2020 with a virtual commencement, until we are able to meet in person.

I'm particularly grateful to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and Senator Harry Reid, Distinguished Fellow in Law and Policy at the law school, for their recognition of the class, and to Mr. Boyd and Barbara Buckley for their warm

Our professors remain at the forefront of providing good and important legal insight during this pandemic and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

  • Professor Ruben Garcia is quoted extensively in this informative piece in TIME where he addresses the issue of employee safety.
  • Professor Francine Lipman was interviewed by USA TODAY in an article about stimulus payments to working families.
  • Professor Ian Bartrum in an article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal on governors' rights during the current shut-down.

The Boyd Law faculty continues to show their dedication to their communities

The Nevada Law Journal held their virtual end of year dinner last week, and I want to thank Editor-In-Chief Anna Guida and the student editors at the NLJ for all their excellent work. I also want to congratulate Greg Cloward who was named the winner of the Justice Elissa Cadish Award for best student note for his piece “A (Cruel and) Unusual Decision: Questions Raised for the Fifth Circuit Moving Forward from Gibson v. Collier.” Justice Cadish is a great friend of the law school and this award is a highlight of the year.

Congratulations as well to the other first-rate student notes selected

Congratulations to Garman Turner Gordon Professor of Law, Nancy Rapoport, who was recently asked if one of her articles could be featured in the Harvard Law School Bankruptcy Roundtable. Nancy's piece, Client-Focused Management of Expectations for Legal Fees in Large Chapter 11 Cases, will be the focus of discussion. Another of our faculty, Professor Eve Hanan, was featured in The Nevada Independent for her timely and important article on selective prisoner release amidst Covid-19. Thank you to our faculty for continuing to be at the forefront of scholarship and policy. Please click here to

In these tough times, every bit of good news helps. I want to thank and congratulate the Career Development team at UNLV Boyd for the just released class of 2019 employment numbers. Our overall employment rate after 10 months is 92.6%, our second highest ever. It is wonderful to see so many of our grads doing well, and I want to thank Dean Rachael Adair, Nikki Harris, and Jennifer Cutshall, for their tireless work on behalf of Boyd students and graduates.

Congratulations also goes out to 2L Joseph Adamiak on his Peggy Browning Fund Fellowship this summer at Arriba Las Vegas Worker Center

This week, UNLV Boyd School of Law announced its partnership with The Nevada Independent and its editor, Jon Ralston, on a new Judicial Races Project. Our goal is to provide information to help voters make more and more informed decisions in judicial races. This is an opportunity for our students to help contribute to the democratic process in Nevada and we are glad for the opportunity to partner with The Nevada Independent on this important project. More can be read about this plan here.

I want to thank Associate Dean Christine Smith for working to keep our Community Service Program working so well serving Nevadans. Our partnerships with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and Nevada Legal Services are going strong. Our students and community partners and attorneys continue to offer free legal education classes online. We have not missed a class. Classes include free legal education on bankruptcy, family law, guardianship, immigration, and small claims. This longstanding partnership with leaders like Barbara Buckley at Legal Aid is an important service to our community and

The response of the UNLV Boyd community to the COVID-19 crisis has been extraordinary. In a little over a week's time, our law school moved all of our courses online. Faculty and students have risen to the occasion, and I appreciate all everyone has done to move so quickly. We are now, and who knows for how long, transitioning into a virtual community. We've hosted our first weekly Town Hall where we come together to discuss questions and concerns as a community. Our Faculty Enrichment Lecture Series is moving to an online format and will be hosting a faculty workshop series online. Our first
