Thanks to a major gift from the GVC Foundation U.S., the law school will soon launch gaming and regulatory online courses. This online training program will be offered to operators, regulators, lawyers and others who work in and around the worldwide gaming industry. The mostly asynchronous classes, which will launch during the first and second quarters of 2021, will be created and taught by instructors with decades of professional gaming and teaching experience. You can read more about the program and its courses through this link.

First, I want to congratulate our friend and colleague, Professor David Orentlicher, who on Tuesday won election to serve in the Nevada Assembly representing District 20. Professor Orentlicher is a nationally distinguished scholar, and now once again a bona fide public servant. You can learn more about him here

Today, the UNLV Boyd School of Law hosted a conference organized by the Nevada Law Journal in partnership with the Nevada Supreme Court. This symposium: Breaking the Cycle: How Nevada Can Effectuate Meaningful Criminal Justice Reform, is this year's contribution to our annual White

I want to thank the leadership of the UNLV Boyd Law Policy and Legislation Society (PALS) and everyone involved for a great event over the weekend. In this innovative new competition, competitors submit bill draft requests that are then turned into proposed bills, and finally presented before legislators at a mock committee hearing. Virtual committee hearings took place over two days, and our panel of judges included several current & former serving State Assembly members and Senators as well as many Boyd alumni, lawyers, and lobbyists who are actively involved in Nevada's legislative process

I want to thank the Society of Advocates for organizing a successful 2020 Client Counseling Competition from Oct. 16th-17th. I particularly want to congratulate the first place winners, law students Mary Groesbeck and RJ Lemus. Special thanks to SOA President Casey Rosenberg and Vice President Paige Silva. The success of the competition is due entirely to students working on behalf of their classmates, and I am particularly impressed by the excellent work in putting the Competition online. Finally, thanks to Professor Sternlight, Professor Nussbaum, Jae Barrick, and to all of the judges and

We are grateful to the Las Vegas chapter of the National Bar Association for partnering with the UNLV Boyd Black Law Student Association to create a new mentorship program for college and law students to work with members of the legal community in the Las Vegas valley. On October 3, the LVNBA and BLSA held an online mentorship mixer that brought together both students and legal professionals to begin establishing these relationships. Participants will have the opportunity to shadow their mentor in court and other legal settings, conduct mock interviews and review students' resumes, and attend

We'd like to share three highlights from Boyd Nation:

Thank you to Dean Christine Smith for once again organizing the law school's 11th Annual Community Law Day and for her work with Partners in ProBono. For this year's Community Law Day, law students and partners in the community helped to provide clients with DACA renewals. All the more impressive, this was done online, and created a template for more online programming of this kind going forward. Partners in Pro Bono was started in the early 2000's in partnership with Barbara Buckley and the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada where we

Congratulations to UNLV Boyd 2L Madyson Hinkel, who won first place in this year's Adam A. Milani Disability Law Writing Competition based on the brief she prepared in Professor Lori Johnson's Lawyering Process 2 class last spring semester. This national competition is sponsored by the Mercer University School of Law and the ABA Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law. As an added bonus, the competition was judged by, among others, UNLV Boyd Professor Linda Berger and Professor Emerita Terry Pollman. This award highlights Madyson's great work and also the law school's #1 ranked

With the school year now fully underway it is a pleasure to welcome everybody back to UNLV Law and to wish you a great year ahead. The law school has come together in extraordinary times, and I’m proud of the dedication and perseverance shown by faculty, staff, and students. Our students in particular have continued to excel in exceptionally challenging times.
